The political victimology of Zizou

Ed:
I think Materazzi probably deserved it...With any luck, Materazzi will be disciplined for racist abuse by FIFA.

Dave Hill:
If - and it's a very big if - I had been him and Materazzi had said to me anything like any of the remarks attributed to him, I think I would have done the same and maybe more.

Matt Foot:
Materazzi called Zidane a "terrorist", presumably in some disgusting reference to his Algerian descent...Materazzi would be guilty of an offence in this country: racially aggravated disorderly conduct, on the basis of abuse of someone because of their nationality

Piara Powar, national co-ordinator for the anti-racism group Kick It Out:
If there was a racial slur then Fifa needs to act.

I'm sure there are plenty more. You might put this down to footie partisanship. We love Zizou. He's the peerless footballer of his generation, the greatest since Maradona. Materazzi was a` pantomime clown (and occasionally violent) during his time at Everton. But something more interesting is going on here. Materazzi is being convicted of racism on the basis of the following:

1. Conflicting lip-reader accounts of what he said. He may have called Zizou a "dirty terrorist" or the "son of a terrorist whore". Or perhaps he just "wished an ugly death on [Zidane] and [his] family". Or maybe called Zidane's sister a prostitute. We're not sure.

2. No knowledge at all about the other half of the conversation. Zidane's back was turned to the camera.

3. When Zidane releases a statement tonight, the word of someone who assaulted Materazzi in front of one bilion witnesses. Someone who already has form for violent retaliation, justified by an uncorroborated charge of a racist slur (vs. Saudi Arabia, 1998). This is purely cirucumstantial, but if all we have is circumstantial evidence on both sides, then it has to be weighed all the same.

None of this is enough, surely. The trite response would be the favourite of the Right: the Left aren't to be trusted on civil liberties, in this instance the right to the presumption of innocence, without prejudice (all those "if-and-it's-a-big-if's" won't do). Further, (some among) the Left's curious obsession with race (to the exclusion of all else) makes them ill-placed to dish out neutral justice, without which there is no justice at all.

In fact I think it's a little worse. The presumption that Zizou was justified in "retaliation" can only be explained by assuming Materazzi fits the northern European stereotype of the Italian as a racist wop. To those that charge Materazzi with racially abusing Zidane, on the basis of so little evidence, I call right back at you.

UPDATE: And on it goes. So far, this episode has told us little about Zidane (he's human, he lost it, he's handy, behind the shyness he's moderately arrogant), nothing about Materazzi, and far too much about the pundits who have chosen to view this incident distorted by their own petty prisms.

On the second, you're welcome.

On the first, well, I don't see how anyone can come to the conclusion that Materazzi said something racist, unless they've already decided he said something racist. And, on what basis have you dcecided that? Certainly not on the basis that his closest friend at Inter is Obafemi Martins.
# posted by Blogger Jarndyce @ 18:31

I suspect Materrazzi probably did say something racist, since it's fairly clear that he was trying to wind Zidane up, and I genuinely do think that racism is more publicly acceptable in Southern Europe - in which case, Materazzi, should, if it can be proven, be punished, although that does nothing to vindicate Zidane, either by the laws of the game or morally. The point you make about Northern European attitudes towards the South of the continent is interesting, though.

yeah it does go on and on and on...
in anycase i doubt we will ever know what was really said....

It goes somewhat against the grain of justice, though, Rob, to pass that judgement based on zero (worse: seriously conflicting) evidence, don't you think?
# posted by Blogger Jarndyce @ 13:29

This pile-on to Materazzi is extraordinary - it's like the reaction to the Cantona flying kick, only more so. The thinking seems to be that you or I wouldn't do something like that without provocation; therefore a superior being like Zidane (or Eric) wouldn't have done something like that without extreme provocation; therefore whatever was said must have been something quite unforgivable (note the tabloids' immediate recourse to 'terrorist' imagery). And Materazzi must be stopped at once, before he provokes somebody less noble than Zidane into doing something even worse.

I was particularly amused by BBC News' painstaking reconstruction of the exchanges, concluding "at this point Materazzi said 'go and fuck yourself'" (although if he was speaking Italian presumably the word was vaffanculo, which is a bit less extreme - more like 'shove it up your arse'). This was where Zidane replied with the headbutt, and I fully expected the newsperson to explain earnestly that Zidane will have found this a highly offensive suggestion, as in the macho culture of French football fucking oneself is widely viewed as dishonourable...
# posted by Blogger Phil @ 22:11

Steady on. My Guardian piece was full of "ifs" for the very good reason that I didn't want to rush to condemn Materazzi on the basis of conflicting and speculative evidence. It didn't condone Zidane's behaviour either: it said he shouldn't have done it. Mostly, the article was a general rumination on the liberating aspects of 'losing it" in the face of provocation - something that lasts for about 15 seconds if you're lucky. I'd also like to point out that I didn't write either the headline or the intro of the article. Best Wishes.

Sorry, Dave, nothing personal, I've just taken this left-wing Materazzi wop-hunt rather badly (for psychobabble fans, my daughter's half-Italianness might explain). It strikes me as more depressing evidence of our shift to a presumption-of-guilt society based solely on the presence or absence of signifiers. Muslim=terrorist. Beard=really, really bad terrorist. Suit=capitalist. Italian=racist peasant. If it were just the tabloids jumping on this, Phil, I'd at least be a little heartened. Actually, so far this is the worst example I've seen. Not just obnoxious, but factually incorrect, too.
# posted by Blogger Jarndyce @ 09:55

I did say I suspected, rather than I knew, and that he should be punished if it can be proven, which raises the evidential bar rather higher than my suspicions. I suppose I come at this from a slightly different angle, which is that whatever Materazzi said to Zidane, Zidane stepped well beyond what is allowed on a football pitch, and so the attempt at justification of his behaviour fails simply because nothing legitimately provokes that on a football pitch.

The whole thing depends on whether you think violence can ever be justified, other than in self-defence against a violent attack. Unless you do think so, then the verbal abuse done (or not) by the Italian chap is a totally seperate issue to the rights and wrongs of Zidane's violent attack.

I would also like to point out that stereotypes become stereotypes for a reason, sometimes a perfectly good one. What this means is that while there will always be exceptions, if you follow the stereotype you'll be correct more often than you'll be incorrect. Which of course is not an argument for not examining our stereotypes and where they come from, just that stereotypes per se are not a bad thing, and neither is their application necessarily a sign of "badness".

i dont know wat happened. but i think the referee`s decision to give him a straight red card was a good one. there was no excuse and its a shame zidane ended his career with a red card.
Anyway Italy won the Worldcup and it is probably the best team in the tournament.
Italy not lose a match from 2002.
