23.10.06Crap rhetoricI wonder what proportion of the people who defend prostitution on the basis that it's the "oldest profession" would defend the fur trade, which has a far better claim to that title, on the same basis.Just askin', y'know.

I've never seen that particular defence. Do you have any examples?

Only a couple of real conversations. Ones that don't involve keyboards.
(I did try a quick Technorati search before I posted but I couldn't be bothered to go beyond 2 pages, so all I got was a stream of crazy teenage MySpacers.) # posted by Jarndyce @ 16:18
I remember my first trip to Amsterdam; I had a fairly laissez-faire attitude towards prostitution at the time, but I found my prejudices challenged when seeing a stick-thin oriental girl wearing next to nothing being violently booted out of a limousine with tinted windows on a chilly autumn morning, on the edge of the red-light district. She was, reluctantly, on the way to work. As I stared aghast as the limo drove off, a local spotted me and shook his head while drawing his index finger across his throat, a move I took as suggesting that looking aghast in the direction of that particular limo was a bad idea.

I still have a pretty laissez-faire attitude towards prostitution, but that experience, amongst others, has to some extent disabused me of the idea that the Dutch model is some utopian paradise. # posted by Quinn @ 17:54 Links to this post: << Home |
