Let's all just, like, be together, yeah

Sounds great, doesn't it:
Last night the Government confirmed its intention to require new faith schools to ensure that 25 per cent of their intake is made up of pupils from a different religious denomination or none

But what's that extra word doing in there: "new"? It doesn't belong in a policy that's designed to sound terribly liberal and secular. Here's what:
In reality, this is directed at new Islamic schools. Faith schools of other denominations are not on the same rise, and if it was intended to be fair, why apply it only to new schools?

So, this is nothing more than prejudice dressed up as liberal neutrality. NuLabour without the balls or conviction to take on the powerful, putting the boot into the weak.

Of course, my solution wouldn't be Osama's. We need to get rid of state-funded bantustan schooling altogether. We wouldn't permit schools to exclude black pupils, so why can't my little girl attend the local Catholic school just because I refuse the hypocrisy of breaking bread on a Sunday. But as usual when faced with two principled options, NuLabour finds a third that's worse than both.

(Sunny has more.)
